Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen celebrated the 10th anniversary of her widely popular third studio album “Emotion” on Wednesday. She marked the occasion with a one-night-only concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. During the show, she announced the album’s re-release for October 17.
The synth-heavy album draws inspiration from 80s pop. Jepsen released “Emotion” in Japan on June 24, 2015, and worldwide on August 21. The album followed the success of her viral 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe.”
The album struggled commercially in terms of sales. However, music critics praised “Emotion” as “catchy” and “unapologetically pop”. The record also brought together fans of Jepsen’s earlier work.
“As such, she proudly presents the definitive version of her pop opus now,” her label said in the announcement.
Several unreleased tracks included
The reissue will include several previously unreleased tracks. These include “More”, “Guardian Angel”, “Back Of My Heart” and “Lost In Devotion”.
The release will also feature two remixes of the hit song “Run Away With Me”. Kyle Shearer and Rostam created the new versions. Rostam also worked on the original album a decade ago.
“Cut To The Feeling”, Jepsen’s single for the Canadian-French film “Ballerina” (2016), will also appear on the re-release. The song did not have a home album for years.
Jepsen reportedly wrote more than 250 songs while creating “Emotion”. The 10th anniversary re-release is not the first time she has opened her archive of unreleased material to fans.
Jepsen hints at ‘Emotion: Side C?’
During her Troubadour concert, Jepsen addressed online speculation about a possible C-side. The idea refers to her critically acclaimed EP “Emotion: Side B”.
Jepsen released “Emotion: Side B” a year after the original album on August 26, 2016. Like its parent album, the EP received generally favourable reviews from critics.
Several publications described the project as more of a “continuation” than a traditional B-side collection.
“Side B” features tracks such as the synth-funk song “First Time”. It also includes “Store”, which features a reworked composition from an anti-smoking campaign Jepsen created for her home province of British Columbia.
Jepsen marked the fifth anniversary of “Emotion” in August 2020. She celebrated by releasing an expanded deluxe edition of the album on streaming platforms.
The edition included the much-requested songs “Never Get To Hold You” and “Love Again”.
During her Los Angeles concert, Jepsen also released “More” on streaming platforms. The song serves as the promotional single for the 10th anniversary re-release.
The track follows the singer as she struggles with her morals. She also battles her feelings for a man who already has a girlfriend.
