Nic Tiongson Named National Artist for Literature

Nicanor Tiongson has been named National Artist for Literature in the Philippines. The recognition was made under Presidential Proclamation No. 1414.

Tiongson is a scholar, critic, and professor emeritus known for his work in Philippine literature, film, and theater. The University of the Philippines confirmed him as one of the country’s 10 new National Artists for 2026.

Tiongson in Philippine literature

Tiongson has made major contributions to the study of Philippine literature and theatre. His scholarship includes Kasaysayan at Estetika ng Sinakulo at Ibang Dulang Panrelihiyon sa Malolos (1975).

Another important work is Kasaysayan ng Komedya sa Pilipinas: 1766-1982 (1982). The books examine the history and artistic importance of the komedya, sinakulo and sarsuwela.

From 1986 to 1994, Tiongson served as CCP vice president and artistic director. He also co-founded the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino on 1 May 1976. Later, he chaired the organisation from 1982 to 1983.

In 2005, Tiongson co-founded the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. He directed the festival until 2012. He also served as editor-in-chief of the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art for its 1994 and 2018 editions.

The UP Film Institute described his work as foundational to understanding Philippine theatre traditions and their development. His influence also extends to literature, cinema, radio and television, as reported by DZUP Balita.
