Lisandro Martinez defends Man Utd outburst amid criticism

Lisandro Martinez has defended his criticism of Manchester United’s hierarchy after their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. He insists his comments reflect his ambition to see the club win major honours.

The Argentina international issued a statement on Wednesday night. He spoke a day after questioning United’s summer recruitment. He also criticised technical director Jason Wilcox following the 2-0 defeat in Madrid.

Martinez admitted that frustration influenced his remarks. However, he stood by his criticism and did not apologise.

Doubling down

“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted,” he said.

“Those who know me know how I live football, with passion, commitment and a huge desire to win.”

The defender had previously said he expected more from the club’s leadership, arguing that United needed greater investment to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

In his latest statement, Martinez maintained that his comments were driven by the ambition he believes should exist throughout the club.

Comments rooted in ambition

“My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours,” he added.

“When I talk about wanting more, I’m talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club.”

However, Martinez also accepted that the players must take responsibility for United’s performances, placing himself at the forefront of that obligation.

Players in the hot seat

“I know that, first and foremost, it’s us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility,” he said.

The defeat to Atletico extended United’s winless run to five matches in all competitions, increasing scrutiny on head coach Michael Carrick and the club’s direction.

Martinez nevertheless reaffirmed his support for the manager and his team-mates, insisting that unity was essential to improving results.
