British Champions Day tips: Top five Ascot picks

It’s Champions Day at Ascot as the British Flat racing season reaches its finale.

We have selected five top tips from the day’s five biggest races. Each contest is a Group 1, so racing fans can look forward to a fantastic afternoon.

From promising stayers to proven Group 1 performers, there are plenty of horses to consider. Let’s take a closer look at our selections. Good luck, everyone!

1330 (Ascot): THE QATAR RACING BRITISH CHAMPIONS LONG DISTANCE CUP (Group 1)

Daiquiri Bay (e/w)

Daiquiri Bay arrives after three successive wins. Furthermore, this progressive four-year-old has already enjoyed success at Ascot. He may still have more improvement to come.

His Ebor victory was particularly impressive. He held on to win by a head in a large, competitive field.

However, stepping up to two miles presents a new challenge. He must also prove himself at Group 1 level. Even so, the price makes him an interesting each-way option, especially with William Buick in the saddle.

1405 (Ascot) THE QATAR RACING BRITISH CHAMPIONS SPRINT STAKES (Group 1)

Division

Division has already shown that he can compete with top sprinters. His close second in a Group 1 contest in France provides encouraging evidence of his ability.

Meanwhile, his latest fourth-place finish at Ascot may not tell the full story. With more experience of the course, he could deliver a stronger performance next time.

The current price also looks appealing. However, keep an eye on the market as the race approaches before making a final decision.

1440 (Ascot) THE QATAR RACING BRITISH CHAMPIONS FILLIES & MARES STAKES (Group 1)

Spartan Nua

Impressive performance in the Yorkshire Oaks in August, and was unlucky not to reel in Kalpana.

Carries 9st 1lb, compared with 9st 7lb for the older fillies and mares and the draw is workable 4.

Her latest run is a concern – but the price appeals again.

1520 (Ascot) THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES (Group 1)

Ten Bob Tony (e/w)

Won the Queen Anne Stakes over the straight mile in June, at a big price, so can handle the course and a G1.

Hasn’t won since but has performed well.

Race conditions look suitable and he’s worth an each-way poke at the price.

1600 (Ascot) THE QATAR RACING CHAMPION STAKES (Group 1)

Bay City Roller (e/w)

Consistent performer at Group level, won the Coronation Cup at Epsom by 10 lengths and was second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

In great form, can perform over various distances and Oisin Murphy in the saddle is another plus.
