Imperfections make every dog special. That is the message behind the 2026 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.
The contest celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Organisers say the event does not exist to make fun of dogs. Instead, it celebrates their unique personalities and individual beauty.
The contest also promotes dog adoption. It reminds people that every dog deserves love, regardless of appearance.
Not your typical ‘beauty’ contest
Many dogs that entered the contest over the years came from puppy mills and shelters.
The event took place at the Sonoma County Fair in California. It partnered with Mug Root Beer for this year’s competition.
“This event has always been about celebrating the dogs that might otherwise be overlooked,” Sonoma-Marin Agricultural Association chief executive officer Mandy Clendenen said in a press release.
Nine dogs competed for the 2026 title.
Jinny Lu, a six-year-old pug, eventually took the top prize.
The winner
Jinny Lu came from the dog meat trade in South Korea.
Pug Rescue helped bring her to the United States. Michelle Grady adopted her four years ago, and Jinny Lu now lives in Ukiah, California.
The pug became known for “arguing” with her own reflection.
Her owner, Michelle Grady, said Jinny Lu “loves competition, meeting everyone, and everything the event stands for.”
Jinny Lu also helps promote dog adoption.
She visits elementary schools to teach children about adopting pets. She also visits memory care facilities and brings joy to patients.
This year marked Jinny Lu’s fourth appearance at the contest.
Her victory earned her $5,000. She will also appear on limited-edition Mug Root Beer cans.
Pinky, an albino Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, finished second.
Otto, another Chihuahua mix, took third place.
Jinny Lu succeeds Petunia, also nicknamed “Pinky.” The two-year-old hairless Frenchie-English Bulldog mix won the contest in 2025.
Jinny Lu finished second that year. She also won the Spirit Award.
The 2026 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest therefore offered more than a competition.
It gave rescued dogs a platform and highlighted the importance of adoption.
The event also showed how unusual features can make dogs memorable and special.
