Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel It terrified generations of readers with Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Now, the terrifying story returns to television with HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry.
The new series explores King’s horror universe through a fresh story set in Derry, Maine. Fans can expect blood, scares and disturbing mysteries as the show reveals more about Pennywise and the town’s dark past.
Finding heart within the horror
Set 27 years before the events of the 2017 film, the series follows a family that moves to Derry, Maine. Soon, they uncover a disturbing pattern of child disappearances.
Andy Muschietti directs the series, while his sister Barbara Muschietti serves as a producer. Jason Fuchs also joins the creative team. The trio previously worked on the recent It film franchise.
The creators want the series to do more than shock viewers. They also want to explore family, memory, secrecy and human relationships.
Pennywise uses fear to lure his victims. However, Andy Muschietti believes strong characters make horror more powerful. His connection to King’s novel also influenced his approach to the series.
“Stephen King is so good at that – he really cares about his characters. It’s never just about the horror; it’s mainly about human journeys,” Andy told Tom’s Guide.
That philosophy also shaped the visual approach. Barbara Muschietti explained that shocking images should always serve the story. She argued that shock value alone does not create lasting horror.
‘King of Horror’ gives approval
Stephen King has already seen the first episode of It: Welcome to Derry. The author praised the series on Threads, calling it both “amazing” and “terrifying”.
Writer Jason Fuchs also revealed that King had a strong connection to the production. The author reviewed much of the material during the development process.
King’s approval gave the creative team a major boost. Fuchs described the author’s reaction as a career highlight.
The series will feature eight episodes. HBO and HBO Max will premiere the first episode on October 26, giving horror fans a timely Halloween-season release.
Pennywise hiding in plain sight
Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. His return remains one of the biggest attractions of It: Welcome to Derry.
However, the creators do not want to reveal too much of the character too quickly. Barbara Muschietti said the team wants Pennywise to remain unpredictable.
The series will use a slow-burn approach to horror. Instead of constantly showing Pennywise, the story will build tension around his presence.
Pennywise may appear when viewers least expect him. As the story unfolds, the line between his presence and absence will become increasingly difficult to define.
With a new mystery, a deeper look at Derry and the return of Pennywise, It: Welcome to Derry aims to give Stephen King fans another frightening journey into one of horror’s most famous worlds.
