HBO has unveiled a teaser for its new prequel series at New York City Comic Con. The show takes viewers back to the world of Game of Thrones.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts George R. R. Martin’s ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ novellas. The series mainly draws from the first book, ‘The Hedge Knight’. Martin co-created the show with writer and showrunner Ira Parker.
A new tale from Westeros
The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall, known as “Dunk”, and his young squire, “Egg”. Peter Claffey plays Dunk, while Dexter Sol Ansell portrays Egg.
Dunk starts his journey as a young and inexperienced knight. He also shows great courage as he travels through Westeros.
Egg may look like an ordinary young squire, but he has a remarkable future ahead of him. He will eventually become King Aegon V Targaryen.
The official synopsis places the story in an era when the Targaryens still control the Iron Throne. Memories of the last dragon also remain fresh among the people of Westeros.
The teaser begins with Dunk burying his former master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, played by Danny Webb. Dunk then takes his belongings and sets out as a wandering knight.
His journey soon brings him together with Egg. The young squire joins Dunk as he travels to Ashford.
Dunk later enters a tournament with help from Baelor Targaryen, played by Bertie Carvel. However, his encounter with Prince Aerion Targaryen creates serious trouble.
Finn Bennett plays Aerion, while the cast also includes Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen.
Shaun Thomas plays Raymun Fossoway, while Edward Ashley portrays Ser Steffon Fossoway. Tanzyn Crawford appears as Tanselle, and Henry Ashton plays Daeron Targaryen.
The events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms take place almost 100 years before Game of Thrones. The story also occurs around 72 years after House of the Dragon.
Story told from Dunk’s POV
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will offer a different perspective on the world of Westeros. The creators want viewers to experience the story mainly through Dunk’s eyes.
Speaking at the New York Comic Con panel, Martin and Parker discussed the show’s different tone. The series will not follow the same approach as the original Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.
Martin previously described the show as having a “much different tone”. He also warned fans that the lighter approach does not make Westeros completely safe.
“It’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe,” Martin said.
The story focuses on Dunk’s journey as he travels through the Seven Kingdoms. His adventures also give viewers a closer look at ordinary people living in the world of Westeros.
A grounded tone and simple storytelling
Showrunner Ira Parker said the creative team wanted to stay close to Dunk’s perspective. The production also aims to capture the mud, dirt and hardships of life as a hedge knight.
Dunk is not a powerful king or a member of a great ruling family. He is a common knight trying to find his place in a dangerous world.
Parker explained that the series will feel smaller and more personal than the original Game of Thrones. The story will focus on Dunk rather than large political battles and sprawling conflicts.
“It’s not the big, sprawling ‘Game of Thrones’ that we’ve come to know and love; it’s close and it’s hard,” Parker told Deadline.
The showrunner also explained why A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms does not use an elaborate title sequence.
The original Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon both use large and dramatic opening sequences. Parker wanted the new series to reflect Dunk’s simpler personality instead.
Ramin Djawadi’s music remains an important part of the wider franchise. However, Parker noted that Dunk has a very different personality from the powerful characters seen in the other shows.
Dunk is straightforward and practical. He does not seek attention or carry the grandeur associated with kings and powerful Targaryens.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will feature six episodes. The series is scheduled to premiere on January 18, 2026.
