Buckingham Palace will honour the late Queen Elizabeth II with a major exhibition celebrating her remarkable fashion legacy. The exhibition will offer visitors a personal look at the monarch through the clothes, accessories and designs she chose throughout her life.
Beyond the seams: A queen’s legacy
The exhibition, “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style,” will explore the woman behind the royal wardrobe. It will show how her clothing choices reflected personal identity, tradition and diplomacy.
The exhibition will open in 2026, the year Queen Elizabeth II would have celebrated her 100th birthday. Curator Caroline de Guitaut said the display will celebrate the monarch’s distinctive British style and lasting influence on fashion.
The garments will reveal how carefully the queen selected what she wore. They will also highlight the skill and craftsmanship behind each piece.
“Queen Elizabeth II’s wardrobe was a masterclass in symbolism, tailoring and British craftsmanship,” de Guitaut said.
The exhibition will therefore look beyond the glamour of royal fashion. It will explore how clothing became an important part of the queen’s public identity.
Iconic and never-before-seen royal treasures
The Royal Collection Trust said the exhibition will feature around 200 pieces from Queen Elizabeth II’s extensive wardrobe and collection.
One of the highlights will be her wedding dress, designed by Sir Norman Hartnell. The queen wore the dress for her wedding to Prince Philip in 1947.
Another notable piece will be a silver lamé and tulle bridesmaid dress. Elizabeth wore it at the age of eight for the 1934 wedding of her uncle, the Duke of Kent.
Visitors will also see several items that have never previously gone on public display. These include everyday hats, headscarves, skirts, riding jackets and jewellery.
One particularly unusual piece is a clear plastic raincoat created by couturier Hardy Amies in the 1960s. Its modern design stood out for its time.
The exhibition will also display original fashion sketches and designers’ notes. Some pieces will feature handwritten annotations by Queen Elizabeth II herself.
These personal details will give visitors a closer look at the thought and care behind the queen’s iconic wardrobe.
‘A snapshot of history’
British designers Erdem Moralioglu, Richard Quinn and Christopher Kane will contribute to the exhibition. The display will open at Buckingham Palace’s King’s Gallery in April 2026.
Designer Erdem Moralioglu described Queen Elizabeth II’s wardrobe as a record of her long life and years of public duty.
“The wardrobe of her late majesty is a snapshot of a very long life, a life of duty, and in so many ways it’s a time capsule,” Moralioglu said.
Queen Elizabeth II reigned as Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from February 6, 1952, until her death in September 2022.
Her public image often featured brightly coloured coats and matching hats. The distinctive style helped people recognise her easily during public appearances.
Her wardrobe also reflected the changing eras she witnessed during her long reign. From formal royal occasions to everyday engagements, her clothing choices became an important part of her public identity.
The Buckingham Palace exhibition will give visitors the chance to see these garments up close. It will also show how Queen Elizabeth II used fashion to communicate tradition, duty and personality.
The collection offers more than a display of royal clothing. It provides a visual record of a remarkable life and one of the most recognisable figures in modern British history.
