Chelsea have been left scrambling after Monaco pulled out of their £47 million agreement to sell midfielder Lamine Camara on transfer deadline day.
The Senegal international looked set to replace Enzo Fernández at Chelsea. Manchester City had agreed a £125m deal to sign the midfielder from the Blues.
Chelsea and Monaco had reached an agreement for Camara. The 22-year-old was also expected to sign a six-year contract.
However, Monaco changed their position after talks over Folarin Balogun’s move to Everton took another twist.
The late decision left Chelsea without the midfield replacement they expected to sign.
‘Everything was done’
Sky Sports pundit Kaveh Solhekol explained Chelsea’s frustration with Monaco.
“Chelsea are really unhappy with the way Monaco behaved,” Solhekol said.
Chelsea’s anger comes from the stage they had reached in the transfer.
According to Solhekol, both clubs had agreed and signed the necessary paperwork. Camara had also planned to travel to London.
“My information is everything was done – written, agreed, signed,” he explained.
The situation therefore surprised Chelsea.
The club believed it had completed the deal. Instead, Monaco reversed its decision after the transfer deadline passed.
Balogun decision crucial
Chelsea had already agreed to sell Fernández to Manchester City.
As a result, the Blues needed another midfielder before the transfer window closed.
Camara appeared to be their answer. Chelsea had agreed a £47m deal with Monaco and expected the midfielder to complete his move.
However, the situation changed because of Folarin Balogun.
Monaco had been working on a deal to send Balogun to Everton. When the clubs renegotiated the terms, Monaco decided to keep Camara available as part of their transfer plans.
That decision created a major problem for Chelsea.
Balogun then changed his mind about the Everton move after midnight. Consequently, Monaco lost the Balogun transfer as well as the chance to complete the Camara deal.
Chelsea therefore ended deadline day without the midfielder they had targeted.
The timing made the situation even more frustrating for the Blues.
Chelsea left disappointed
From Chelsea’s perspective, the timing could hardly have been worse.
The club had allowed Fernández to join Manchester City after agreeing a £125m fee.
Chelsea expected Camara to fill the midfield gap. Instead, Monaco ended the deal at the last moment.
The Blues now have the money from the Fernández sale. However, they do not have the replacement they wanted.
Solhekol added: “Chelsea don’t believe this is the way clubs should conduct business.”
The saga could still have an impact beyond this transfer window.
Football journalist Ben Jacobs told Talksport that Liverpool had contacted Monaco. The Premier League club could have an interest in Camara for 2027.
For now, though, Chelsea must deal with the outcome.
The Camara saga stands out as one of the most dramatic stories from transfer deadline day.
