Not Suitable for Work will not return for a second season on Hulu. The cancellation leaves viewers with a major cliffhanger that may never get resolved.
Hulu did not give a reason for the cancellation. However, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter reported on August 24 that producer Warner Bros. planned to pitch the series to other networks and streaming platforms.
Mindy Kaling’s sitcom joined several other Hulu shows that recently faced cancellation. Those titles include crime comedy Deli Boys, dating reality series Love Overboard, and Chloe Zhao’s planned reboot of the 1990s supernatural classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Gen Z sitcom
Not Suitable for Work followed five young New Yorkers as they dealt with careers, relationships, and life in the workplace.
The comedy starred Ella Hunt, Avantika Vandanapu, Will Angus, Jack Martin, and Nicholas Duvernay. The cast also featured several high-profile guest stars.
Jay Ellis, Constance Wu, Victor Garber, Harry Richardson, Ego Nwodim, Greg Germann, and Judy Gold all appeared in the series. Gigi Hadid also made a cameo.
Mixed reactions
News of the cancellation quickly sparked reactions from fans. Kaling also shared her response on Instagram.
The creator thanked her cast, crew, and viewers. She also praised fans for their comments, messages, edits, and support for the series.
“I love this show, I loved making this show, I love these people, and I love all of you for all your sweet comments, messages, edits and for watching @notsuitableforwork,” she wrote alongside behind-the-scenes photos.
Mindy Kaling’s television career
Kaling has built a successful career across television and streaming. She first became widely known through The Office.
She later created and ran several successful series. Her credits include Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and Running Point. She also worked on HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls, NBC’s Champions, and Fox’s The Mindy Project.
For now, however, fans will have to wait and see whether another network or streaming service picks up Not Suitable for Work.
