The world of Egyptian mythology is finally coming to Disney+.
After the success of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” Disney+ is expanding Rick Riordan’s mythological universe.
The streaming service is developing a live-action adaptation of “The Kane Chronicles.”
According to Variety, Riordan will write and executive produce the series if Disney orders it. Filmmaker Angela Robinson will also work on the project.
While “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” explores Greek mythology, “The Kane Chronicles” will focus on ancient Egyptian gods and legends.
Netflix’s failed adaptation
The project will reunite Riordan with executive producers Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell from the Gotham Group.
Riordan will also work again with his wife, Rebecca Riordan. She serves as a non-writing executive producer on “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.”
This development gives “The Kane Chronicles” another chance to reach the screen.
Netflix previously planned a film adaptation. However, the company dropped those plans in 2024.
“Right now, Kane Chronicles is in ‘turnaround,’ which means Netflix has decided not to move forward and their option has lapsed after trying for two years to develop a script they liked,” Riordan told Variety in 2024.
After Netflix’s option expired, the rights returned to Riordan.
Soon after, Disney’s 20th Television began developing the books as a live-action series.
A journey into Egyptian mythology
“The Kane Chronicles” consists of three books.
The trilogy includes “The Red Pyramid,” “The Throne of Fire” and “The Serpent’s Shadow.”
The story draws heavily from Egyptian mythology.
It also shares a universe with “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.”
The series will follow siblings Carter and Sadie Kane.
The two siblings have grown apart over the years. However, their family history soon brings them together.
Carter and Sadie descend from Egyptian pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great.
Their adventure begins when they discover their connection to ancient Egypt.
They also learn that their bloodline links them to the Egyptian gods.
As a result, the siblings must quickly learn how to use their new abilities.
Disney+ describes the story as a battle against powerful forces from the ancient world.
“When their father unleashes the god of chaos and vanishes, the estranged Kane siblings must master their inherited Egyptian magic, forge unlikely alliances, and rescue their father before warring gods can wreak havoc on our modern world,” according to the Disney+ logline.
The new series could therefore give fans a fresh look at Riordan’s mythological universe.
