Champions League: Liverpool, Villa shine as PSG stun Man City

The UEFA Champions League delivered another dramatic night of football on Wednesday, with goals, stunning comebacks and convincing victories taking centre stage across Europe.

Liverpool and Aston Villa enjoyed emphatic wins, while Real Madrid produced a remarkable late turnaround to defeat Roma away from home.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain claimed an impressive victory over Manchester City in a high-scoring encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

Bradley Barcola’s hat-trick, Aston Villa’s six-goal performance and Real Madrid’s late heroics provided some of the evening’s biggest talking points, as Europe’s leading clubs continued their league-phase campaigns.

Barcola hat-trick headlines nine-goal thriller

Liverpool produced an entertaining attacking display to beat LASK 6-3 in Austria, with Bradley Barcola scoring his first three goals for the club.

The French forward arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in August for a reported £123 million but had faced criticism following a slow start to his Liverpool career.

Ronald Araújo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, rising to meet Kostas Tsimikas’ corner with a powerful header for his first Liverpool goal.

Barcola doubled the advantage just 96 seconds later, finishing after an incisive run from Rio Ngumoha created the opportunity.

The forward struck again in the 37th minute after combining with Florian Wirtz, giving Liverpool a commanding three-goal lead at half-time.

Jeremie Frimpong headed home the fourth shortly after the restart before Barcola completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute, finishing a pass from Frimpong.

Lewis Koumas added Liverpool’s sixth, but defensive lapses allowed Florian Flecker to score twice and give LASK hope of an unlikely comeback.

Despite conceding three goals, Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Champions League campaign, with Barcola’s breakthrough performance providing a significant boost for the visitors.

Jackson and Barkley inspire emphatic win

Aston Villa celebrated the return of Champions League football to Villa Park with a commanding 6-0 victory over Fenerbahçe.

Unai Emery’s side established control early, with Johan Manzambi opening the scoring in the 12th minute when his effort deflected off Fenerbahçe captain Milan Škriniar.

Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s advantage in the 31st minute, finishing confidently after being played through by Boubacar Kamara.

The Senegalese striker struck again eight minutes later, converting another opportunity to put Villa 3-0 ahead at the interval.

Fenerbahçe threatened briefly through Vedat Muriqi, while Oğuz Aydın struck the crossbar, but goalkeeper Zion Suzuki helped Villa preserve their comfortable lead.

Ross Barkley made it four from the penalty spot in the 68th minute after Manzambi was fouled, before scoring again four minutes later with a deflected effort.

Substitute Tammy Abraham completed the rout in the 90th minute, finishing after Alysson created the opportunity to cap an outstanding evening for the hosts.

The result marked Villa’s biggest-ever victory in major European competition and secured a second consecutive Champions League win, strengthening their early position in the league phase.

Late comeback stuns Mourinho’s former club

Real Madrid produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Roma 4-3 in a dramatic encounter at the Stadio Olimpico.

The match also marked an emotional reunion for José Mourinho, who returned to face the club he previously managed and helped guide to European success.

Roma started strongly and took the lead in the 20th minute when Marten de Roon fired past Thibaut Courtois from distance.

Kylian Mbappé responded five minutes later, marking his 100th Champions League appearance with an equaliser after a defensive mistake allowed him through on goal.

Roma regained control after the interval, with Donyell Malen scoring twice in the opening stages of the second half to put the hosts 3-1 ahead.

Real Madrid appeared to be running out of time before Carlos Espí reduced the deficit with a close-range finish following a corner.

Endrick then headed home from another set-piece two minutes later, completing Madrid’s recovery and setting up a frantic finish.

Antonio Rüdiger delivered the decisive blow in the 90th minute, finishing from an Arda Güler corner to complete an extraordinary turnaround.

The victory gave Real Madrid six points from their opening two league-phase matches, while Roma were left with just one point after letting a commanding position slip away.

Haaland struck again in the 75th minute to reduce the deficit to two goals, giving Man City a chance to mount a late comeback.

The hosts created further opportunities and hit the woodwork, but PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Ferran Torres from the penalty spot to preserve the visitors’ advantage.
