Como 4-1 man utd: Carrick’s winless run continues

Michael Carrick’s men travelled to Italy on Wednesday, October 21, to face Como in the third round of the UEFA Champions League and came back empty-handed.

Nico Paz, who impressed all night, kicked off the scoring just two minutes into the game before providing an assist four minutes into the second half as Anastasios Douvikas made it 2-0.

Paz completed his brace in the 57th minute, while Jacobo Ramon scored Como’s last of the night with 14 minutes left of normal time.

Man United struggles worsen

Manchester United couldn’t find the back of the net until stoppage time, with Joshua Zirkzee making good use of Amad Diallo’s cross.

The 4-1 loss to Cesc Fabregas’ men marks Manchester United’s seventh consecutive game without a win across all competitions, their longest run since a stretch of eight matches between November and December 2015.

While Como will be pleased to be ninth with six points, Man United now sit 21st with only three points from three games.

They have suffered their second defeat of this season’s Champions League with their only win coming against Azerbaijan side Sabah FK.

Carrick reacts to defeat

“I’m really angry but you’ve got to move on and deal with what’s next. At this moment in time, there’s a lot to do before the next game to get the team ready, because that was a difficult night for everybody.

“It’s not about playing for me – it’s about playing for this club. My whole life’s wrapped around it [Man Utd]. I genuinely give everything I possibly can. It’s not about me, it’s about what we all give,” the Manchester United head coach said post-match.

When asked if he believes that his players give their all as he does he replied honestly, saying, “I’d like to think so. I didn’t like what I saw tonight though.”

Carrick’s next tests

The Red Devils’ next European test comes on Tuesday, November 3, against another Italian side, Roma, who beat Slovan 4-0 the night before Carrick’s defeat to Como, and sit third on the Serie A table.

Before then, Manchester United face Bournemouth and Chelsea in the Premier League. The game against the Cherries could be more evenly matched, but Man United’s form is far from promising.

The game against Chelsea will be a true test as Carrick faces Xabi Alonso’s strong attacking Blues.
