Liverpool vs Man City: Premier League news and red card

Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the Premier League season after Manchester City claimed a 3-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday, with Ryan Gravenberch’s sending-off proving a decisive turning point.

The Reds had shown plenty of intensity in a tightly-contested first half, but their afternoon unravelled after Gravenberch received a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring three minutes later before Jeremy Doku doubled Man City’s advantage, with Rayan Cherki adding a third to complete a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool.

Van Dijk reflects on difficult defeat

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged that his side had competed well before the dismissal, but admitted that playing with 10 men against the league leaders made the challenge considerably harder.

“I think the first half was good on our side, we showed a lot of intensity,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

The Dutch defender added that Liverpool had shown their attacking intent, although there were opportunities to improve their counter-attacking play.

“We had a lot of intensity; that was the bare minimum,” he said.

However, Gravenberch’s dismissal changed the complexion of the contest, with City taking advantage almost immediately.

“Then it becomes a very difficult game against them again,” Van Dijk explained.

The sending-off proved a major talking point, with Van Dijk questioning the consistency of the referee’s disciplinary decisions.

Asked whether Gravenberch had been unfortunate to receive his marching orders, the Liverpool captain replied: “Probably, yeah. But the matter of fact is he gets a second yellow.”

Liverpool had been pushing for an opener before the dismissal, but Haaland’s goal just three minutes later left the hosts facing an uphill battle.

Man City subsequently capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Doku and Cherki finding the net to secure a convincing victory.

The match also unfolded against the backdrop of Manchester City’s recent Premier League financial-rules verdict, with Liverpool supporters making their feelings known throughout the afternoon.

Man City have appealed the independent commission’s findings and continue to deny wrongdoing, but the controversy added another layer to an already heated rivalry.

Van Dijk declined to offer a definitive judgement while the process remains ongoing, instead insisting that his focus must return to football.

Liverpool must now regroup quickly after a damaging result, with the captain acknowledging the responsibility to respond in their next fixture.
