Nations League Round 4: England Build momentum

The fourth round of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League brought another busy few days of international football, but England were among the biggest winners as they strengthened their position in Group A3.

England’s latest victory was the standout result for Thomas Tuchel’s side, while Spain and Portugal also secured their places in the quarter-finals.

England’s 3-0 victory over Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday, October 6, extended their winning streak to three games and gave Tuchel another positive result to take from the international break.

Harry Kane was once again at the centre of the action on a landmark night, matching Peter Shilton’s England record with his 125th cap and scoring twice.

He also helped create the opener, with his cross turned into his own net by Czechia defender Vladimir Coufal.

Strong response

More importantly, the result continued England’s strong response after their opening 3-2 defeat to Spain.

Three straight wins, three clean sheets and 12 goals across those games suggest Tuchel is beginning to find greater consistency from his side.

England remain second in Group A3 on nine points, while Spain sit top on 12 after coming from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in Split.

Mikel Merino scored twice for the world champions, who became the second team to secure a place in the Nations League quarter-finals.

Spain and Portugal lead the way

Spain were not the only team to book their place in the knockout stage during Round 4.

Portugal became the first side to qualify after Goncalo Ramos scored a late winner in a 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday.

Elsewhere, France produced one of the round’s biggest comebacks by beating Belgium 4-1 after falling behind early on.

Rayan Cherki helped turn the game around as France strengthened their position in Group A1.

Italy also moved into second place in the group after beating Turkiye 3-1 in Bologna.

The Netherlands claimed a valuable 2-1 win over Serbia, while Denmark edged Wales 1-0.

Scotland, meanwhile, suffered a setback in League B1 after losing 2-1 to Slovenia, allowing Switzerland to strengthen their grip on the group with a 3-0 victory over North Macedonia.

England’s momentum is building

For England, though, the biggest takeaway from Round 4 is the growing sense of momentum.

After a difficult start against Spain, Tuchel’s team have responded with three convincing victories.

The November fixtures will provide a tougher test, but England now look increasingly well placed to reach the quarter-finals and challenge the stronger sides in League A.
