Steven Soderbergh will help complete filming on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves attends to a family matter. DC Studios confirmed the arrangement in a statement on Thursday.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker offered to help with the remaining weeks of principal photography. DC Studios supports the decision, and Reeves will remain closely involved.
Both directors will work with the cast and crew to protect Reeves’ vision. Reeves also expects to oversee post-production when he can return to the project.
Soderbergh vows to preserve Reeves’ vision
Soderbergh, known for his work in the ‘Ocean’s’ trilogy and ‘Traffic’, among others, said his role would be to ensure that the new footage fits the material already filmed.
“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film,” he said.
Reeves also addressed the situation on social media, confirming he would not be leaving the project and expressing gratitude for Soderbergh’s assistance.
On October 5, multiple media outlets reported that production for ‘The Batman Part II’ was paused due to Reeves stepping away to deal with a family matter.
Before the production pause, filming had been underway in London.
Actor Robert Pattinson, who plays Batman, also acknowledged the delay during the October 11 premiere of “Primetime” in London.
“We’re pausing for a little bit and then we’re going to figure it all out,” Pattinson said.
Release date still uncertain
‘The Batman Part II’ is scheduled to open in theaters on February 18, 2028.
However, sources have said it is too early to determine whether the production interruption will affect the release date.
Pattinson is returning as Batman, alongside Andy Serkis as Alfred and Colin Farrell as Penguin.
New cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.
Reeves co-wrote and directed the first “Batman” revival film, which premiered in March 2022 and grossed $772.8 million worldwide.
The sequel has faced several delays since the original film’s release. Reeves announced that the script had been finalized in June 2025, and filming was reported to have begun before the latest interruption.
