The nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards arrived on Tuesday, July 15, at the Los Angeles Television Academy.
Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) and Brenda Song (Running Point) hosted the announcement.
This year’s Emmy race looks highly competitive. Severance, The Penguin, The White Lotus and The Studio earned the most nominations.
2025 nominations
Apple TV+’s Severance leads the 2025 Emmy nominations with 27 nods for its second season.
The nominations include Best Drama Series. Britt Lower earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series, while Adam Scott received a nod for Best Actor.
Patricia Arquette also earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman and John Turturro each received a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Severance will compete for Best Drama Series against Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Slow Horses and The White Lotus.
The AppleTV+ comedy ‘The Studio’ leads with 23 nominations, a record for most nominations for a comedy in a single year.
In the comedy categories, Seth Rogen was nominated for Best Actor, Best Director and Best Writer.
Additionally, Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Ike Barinholtz for Best Supporting Actor.
‘The Studio’ will contend with last year’s winner, ‘Hacks’, as well as ‘The Bear’, ‘Abbott Elementary’, ‘Only Murders in the Building’, ‘Nobody Wants This’, ‘Shrinking’ and ‘What We Do in the Shadows’.
‘The Bear’ was last year’s favourite, but this year it received less Emmy votes.
The series was awarded 13 nominations, 10 less than last year, after some controversy.
Some industry players were shocked that a tense workplace series could be nominated in the comedy category.
The Netflix-acclaimed series ‘Adolescence’ received 13 nominations, including Best Limited or Anthology Series.
It’s believed to be the category’s favourite.
It will compete with ‘The Penguin’, ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’, ‘Dying for Sex’ and ‘Black Mirror’.
The limited series’ leading star, Stephen Graham, was nominated for Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series.
Jack Thorne, who created the drama with Graham, is nominated for Best Writing in a Limited or Anthology Series alongside him.
Other notable nominations
Kathy Bates earned a Best Actress in a Drama Series nomination for CBS’s Matlock.
At 77, Bates became the oldest actress to receive a nomination in the category.
She will compete against Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Britt Lower (Severance), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) and Keri Russell (The Diplomat).
British actor Owen Cooper also made Emmy history.
The 15-year-old became the youngest actor ever nominated for an Emmy. He received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in Adolescence.
Cooper will compete against his co-star Ashley Walters. Christine Tremarco and Erin Doherty will compete for Best Supporting Actress.
Harrison Ford earned his first Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He received the nod for his role in Shrinking.
Noah Wyle also returned to the Emmy race with a Best Actor in a Drama Series nomination for The Pitt. It marks his first nomination in 26 years.
Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard each earned their first Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series nominations. Both received recognition for their appearances in The Studio.
HBO Max leads the network rankings
HBO Max topped the network rankings with 142 Emmy nominations.
The total marks the platform’s highest-ever nomination haul. The Penguin, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, Hacks and The Pitt helped drive the result.
The network also bounced back after falling to third place last year. That marked its first drop to third in decades.
Netflix finished second with 120 nominations.
The platform still holds the record for the highest number of Emmy nominations in a single year. Netflix earned 160 nominations in 2020.
Apple TV+ ranked third with 81 nominations. The result marked its highest-ever total.
When are the 2025 Emmy Awards?
The 77th Emmy Awards will air live on CBS from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14.
Nate Bargatze will host the ceremony.
With Severance, The Penguin, The White Lotus, The Studio and Adolescence among the leading contenders, the 2025 Emmy Awards could deliver one of the most competitive races in years.
Network ranking
HBO Max scored 142 Emmy nominations in total – the most of any network and the highest tally HBO Max has ever recorded.
This is thanks to ‘The Penguin’, ‘The White Lotus’, ‘The Last of Us’, ‘Hacks’ and ‘The Pitt’.
It’s a comeback from last year when the network fell to third place among all networks for the first time in decades.
Netflix remained in second place with 120 nominations but it still holds the record for the most nominations ever in a year for a platform – 160 in 2020.
It’s tied with CBS for most wins – 44 in 2021, the same number of wins CBS had in 1974.
Apple TV+ was in third with 81, its highest in total.
Apple TV+ remains the least watched, ranking below Paramount+, Peacock, HBO Max and free streamers like Pluto and Tubi.
