M. Night Shyamalan Launches Surprise YouTube Channel

On August 27, The Sixth Sense and Split director M. Night Shyamalan released his first YouTube video. The filmmaker used the video to announce his new channel.

The clip, titled “This is my first YouTube video”, runs for around two minutes. Shyamalan sits on a scenic bench and speaks directly to the camera in one take.

The two-time Oscar-nominated director introduced himself and explained what he hopes to achieve with the channel.

“I’m a filmmaker, [I] make movies for a living, and this is my YouTube channel,” Shyamalan said at the start of the video.

He said the channel would give him an opportunity to reflect and connect with his audience.

“What I hope it is is an opportunity to reflect and get to know each other, to deepen the relationship,” he said.

New waters for Shyamalan

Shyamalan has built his career around supernatural stories, unusual ideas and unexpected twists. However, he admitted that starting a YouTube channel feels unfamiliar.

The filmmaker also said that the uncertainty makes the project exciting.

“When I’m scared, it usually feels like I’m doing something right,” Shyamalan said.

He hopes the channel will help him connect with audiences in a different way. He also wants to challenge some of his own ideas about social media.

Shyamalan explained that he does not want to lose the values that matter to him. At the same time, he wants to give himself more freedom to experiment.

“Something about it feels right. As long as I don’t feel like I’m breaking anything that’s important to me in [my heart], then I’m okay with it,” he added.

One of the most striking comments came when Shyamalan described the project as “a permission to be not great”.

The comment suggests that the filmmaker sees YouTube as a space where he can experiment without the same pressure that comes with making major Hollywood films.

Shyamalan also explained why he chose the location for his first video.

He filmed the clip in a garden outside his office. The filmmaker often visits the garden to develop ideas.

A tree planted in memory of his late father also stands nearby, giving the setting a personal connection.

Flipping the script on the YouTuber-director trend

Shyamalan’s move to YouTube comes as more online creators make the transition into filmmaking.

In 2026, creators such as Curry Barker and Kane Parsons have attracted attention for their work in film and television. Barker is known for Obsession, while Parsons built an audience through his Backrooms projects.

These creators represent a new generation of filmmakers. They have used online platforms to develop their ideas before moving into larger entertainment projects.

Shyamalan’s career follows the opposite path.

The 56-year-old filmmaker has spent around three decades working in Hollywood. He now joins YouTube after establishing himself as a major director.

His decision highlights the changing relationship between Hollywood and online platforms.

YouTube allows established filmmakers to communicate directly with audiences. It also gives creators more control over how they present their ideas.

For Shyamalan, the M. Night Shyamalan YouTube channel could become another outlet for his creativity.

His next video is scheduled for Sunday, August 30.
