Former Southampton striker Iain Dowie says in-form Saints forward Cyle Larin reminds him of Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Dowie called Larin “a handful” and “physically intimidating” while praising his excellent start to the Championship season.
France striker Mateta has played a key role for another of Dowie’s former clubs, Premier League side Crystal Palace.
Larin has enjoyed an excellent start to the Championship campaign. The Canada international scored four league goals in August.
His performances earned him the Championship Player of the Month award. Dowie also believes Larin shows why Southampton allowed Ross Stewart to leave this summer.
Why Larin Reminds Dowie of Mateta
Dowie’s comparison with Jean-Philippe Mateta highlights Larin’s physical presence.
Both forwards can use their strength to create problems for defenders. They can also attack space and finish chances inside the penalty area.
Larin has quickly become an important attacking option for Southampton. His goals have helped him make a strong impression during the opening weeks of the Championship season.
Meanwhile, his experience across several clubs has given him plenty of experience at the highest level.
Dowie Questions Southampton’s Decision on Stewart
Dowie remains unconvinced by Southampton’s decision to move on from Ross Stewart.
The striker now plays for Swansea. However, an injury has disrupted his start to the new campaign.
“Considering how Ross Stewart finished last season, I think it might have been a mistake from Southampton to let him leave,” Dowie said.
“He’s yet to start due to injury, but he had such a great end to last season.
“I just think if Ross Stewart is fit, he’ll get goals. Wherever he’s been, he’s scored.
“Losing him on a free didn’t seem like a very sensible thing to do, but that’s where they are.”
Southampton Trust Larin to Deliver
For Southampton, Larin’s early-season form provides an important attacking boost.
His goals have already earned individual recognition. Furthermore, his physical style gives the Saints another option in the final third.
Dowie’s comments also underline the importance of Southampton’s decision to trust Larin after Stewart’s departure.
If Larin maintains his current form, he could play a major role in Southampton’s Championship campaign.
His performances will also give supporters plenty of reason to believe he can continue producing goals throughout the season.
