Chelsea are reportedly exploring a surprise move for Jordan Henderson as Xabi Alonso looks to add leadership and experience to his squad.
The Blues are interested in the 36-year-old midfielder, according to reports.
Henderson joined Brentford last summer. However, a clause in his contract could allow him to leave without a transfer fee.
That situation has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.
Chelsea want more experience
Chelsea have focused heavily on young players in recent transfer windows.
Now, the club wants more experience in the squad. Brighton’s Danny Welbeck is also on Chelsea’s radar.
Henderson could give Alonso another experienced option in midfield.
The former Liverpool captain has won major honours during his career. He lifted both the Premier League and Champions League trophies with Liverpool.
Henderson also has extensive experience with England. He has remained a regular part of the national team setup.
That experience could help Chelsea’s younger players.
Alonso also values Henderson’s professionalism. The Chelsea boss reportedly believes the midfielder could guide the club’s young stars.
His influence could extend beyond matchdays. Henderson could also help the squad during training and inside the dressing room.
Brentford stay relaxed over situation
Henderson only signed for Brentford on a free transfer after leaving Ajax in early 2024, agreeing a two-year deal with the west London club.
However, reports suggest Brentford would be willing to allow Henderson to leave on a free transfer if he decides to pursue a move elsewhere.
Chelsea are currently leading the race for his signature, although other Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation.
No agreement has been reached yet for Henderson or Welbeck, and discussions remain at an early stage.
But if the transfers go through, the two would become the most unexpected Chelsea signings of the summer.
The Premier League veterans would offer very different profiles to the club’s recent arrivals, with Chelsea hoping their winning mentality and vast experience can help Alonso’s side compete for major honours in the coming campaign.
