British singer Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour faces fresh disruption after four artists withdrew from upcoming shows following Macklemore’s removal from the tour.
Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Irish band Beoga all announced their departures on Tuesday.
The artists said they were leaving in solidarity with Macklemore after his removal from the tour. The decision followed the rapper’s public support for Palestinians during a concert in New Jersey.
Macklemore had been scheduled to perform at several remaining US shows. His removal came after concerns from venues and other parties about his comments.
The controversy has now spread beyond Macklemore. It has also created uncertainty around the remaining dates of Sheeran’s tour.
‘Artists must not be silenced’
Sheeran addressed the controversy after Macklemore left the tour.
The singer said the promoter made the decision to remove Macklemore. Sheeran said it was not his decision.
He also said he had spoken with venues and the promoter in an attempt to find another solution. However, he said those efforts did not change the final decision.
Sheeran said he wanted to avoid turning his concerts into political forums. He also acknowledged the suffering caused by the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
His statement came shortly before several artists announced their withdrawals.
Finneas was among the first to confirm his decision. The singer said he would no longer perform at six South American shows scheduled for November and December.
In his statement, Finneas wrote that artists should not face pressure for speaking about people they believe are being oppressed. He also expressed his support for Palestinians.
Rowe first to pull out
Irish singer Aaron Rowe was also among the first artists to leave the Loop Tour.
Rowe said he did not make the decision lightly. He described Sheeran as a friend and thanked him for the opportunities he had received.
However, Rowe said his Irish background shaped his view of the situation. He referred to Ireland’s history of famine, occupation and conflict.
Rowe said he could not continue with the tour while believing that artists were facing pressure over their statements about Palestinian suffering.
He ended his statement by expressing support for Palestine.
Lukas Graham then follows suit
Danish band Lukas Graham also announced its departure from the tour.
Lead singer Lukas Forchhammer said it was difficult to watch families lose loved ones in conflicts around the world.
The band said artists should be able to discuss war, civilian deaths and the experiences of children.
Lukas Graham also questioned whether financial power should influence which voices receive attention.
The band used its statement to express support for the right of artists to speak about humanitarian issues.
Beoga departure promises bigger impact
Irish band Beoga also withdrew from Sheeran’s tour.
The group had a different role from the other supporting acts. Beoga had been performing with Sheeran as part of his touring setup.
The band has also worked with Sheeran on music, including songs such as “Galway Girl.”
Beoga said it was leaving because of what it described as the silencing of Macklemore.
The band also said it values dialogue and wants to support discussion about the situation facing Palestinians.
Beoga stressed that its decision did not end its friendship with Sheeran.
Its departure could have a more direct effect on Sheeran’s performances because the musicians had been part of his live show rather than simply opening his concerts.
More artists side with Macklemore
The controversy has also attracted support for Macklemore from other musicians and public figures.
Children’s educator and YouTube personality Ms Rachel criticized the decision on social media. She argued that people should be able to support Palestinians without facing pressure to remain silent.
Singer Kehlani also expressed support for Macklemore.
Rock band Garbage joined the discussion as well. The group criticized the decision to remove Macklemore and defended his right to speak about the conflict.
MUNA also posted in support of Macklemore.
These reactions add to the wider debate about political expression, music and the role of artists during international conflicts.
Loop tour faces uncertain road
The withdrawals leave Sheeran’s upcoming shows without the support line-up that had been scheduled for the remaining North American dates.
According to ABC News, the tour is due to resume on Saturday in Philadelphia, with nine North American dates remaining before Sheeran moves on to South America.
As of Wednesday, Sheeran’s team had yet to announce whether there would be a replacement opening act.
