The popular HBO television series Game of Thrones will officially head to the movies as Warner Bros. Discovery confirms that the spinoff Aegon’s Conquest will be a theatrical feature film.
The prequel movie will mark the first time that the franchise created by George RR Martin will be shown on the big screen following its tremendous success in the television setting since 2011.
Aegon’s Conquest would be the latest addition to the Game of Thrones franchise after House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
‘Beyond 2027’
Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled the updates for the upcoming spinoff movie in a quarterly letter to shareholders last August 6, 2026.
The letter confirmed that the prequel will be developed alongside other major ticket projects, namely the next films for The Matrix, Batman, and a live-action movie of The Jetsons featuring Jim Carrey.
These projects are part of the company’s Beyond 2027 slate. This would mean that the earliest release year that fans can expect for the GOT prequel is in 2028.
It added that the movie will be based on the works of Martin.
The Targaryen dynasty
Aegon’s Conquest will follow the beginning of the Targaryen dynasty that will rule Westeros for 300 years before their exile to Essos, about 15 years before the start of the main series.
Aegon Targaryen, alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, will unleash a campaign against the Seven Kingdoms of the continent through their dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes.
In the official lore, the Targaryens managed to subdue six of the seven monarchies of Westeros, following House Martell’s victory over the invading forces using guerrilla tactics in defending Dorne.
This, however, did not stop Aegon from claiming dominion over the entirety of Westeros, taking up the title of Protector of the Realm and Rightful King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men.
Aegon’s victory over the Westerosi kingdoms ushered in a new era, one that consolidated power in King’s Landing, away from the warring period between the Great Houses.
Dorne, meanwhile, would later join the Targaryens through marriage instead of battle, about a century after the Conquest.
