Gaming news: Epic wants AI to build next Disney game

A major video game from Epic Games and Disney has reportedly hit a delay, and the reason has sparked debate across the gaming industry.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Epic has pushed back the release of an upcoming game featuring characters from franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars as the company moves toward an “AI-first” development process.

The title had reportedly been targeting a March release. That timeline has now slipped, with no updated launch date publicly communicated.

A different way of making games

The delay isn’t the only thing drawing attention.

Bloomberg reported that developers working on the project were told to make greater use of artificial intelligence tools, including Anthropic’s Claude.

Internal messages reviewed by the publication reportedly described a future in which AI generates much of the game’s code and artwork, while human developers guide, review and refine the results.

In a statement, Jake Jones, communications director at Epic Games, said the company is embracing “AI-accelerated development” while emphasizing that Epic’s developers remain the creative force behind its projects.

Not everyone is convinced

According to Bloomberg’s sources, the announcement surprised some employees, with developers questioning how reliable AI-generated work would be and whether the approach could create additional complications during production.

Those concerns reflect a broader conversation happening throughout the gaming industry.

Studios have increasingly adopted AI tools for tasks ranging from coding assistance to concept generation, but the technology remains controversial among many developers and players.

A high-profile test for AI

What makes the reported shift notable is the scale of the project.

The game is part of a broader partnership between Disney and Epic Games.

In 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion in the company as part of plans to build new gaming and entertainment experiences around some of its biggest franchises.

If the reports are accurate, the Disney title could become one of the first major blockbuster games developed primarily through an AI-driven workflow.
