Rolling Stone magazine has published its list of the 200 greatest rock songs of the 21st century so far – did your favourite song make it into the list?
Decades have passed and rock and its evolutions over time are still a strong pillar in music.
Celebrating the success of the genre, the Rolling Stone magazine has revealed its greatest rock songs of the modern era.
The rankings featured a wide-range of different rock styles, generations and voices; from cult classics to underground.
“Some of these songs are innovative and complex; others are three-chord bangers to make you jump up and down. Their only thing in common is that they rock,” the Rolling Stone wrote.
A banger from 2003 earns top spot
The list spanned from classic rockstars such as The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slipknot, Metallica, and The Rolling Stones.
Maps by American indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs emerged as Top 1, a 2003 track that recently went viral online.
Among the notable songs in the list are: Guitar by Prince; Reptilia by The Strokes, Incinerate by Sonic Youth, Like a Stone by Audioslave; You’re So Last Summer by Taking Back Sunday, I’m Not Okay by My Chemical Romance, and L.A. by Elliot Smith.
Heavy metal band Black Sabbath was also mentioned for God is Dead, along with In the End by Linkin Park, I Always Wanna Die by The 1975, and Chop Suey by System of a Down.
From legends to next big things
The list also paid tribute to iconic stars such as David Bowie, Bob Dylan, U2, Greenday, and Paramore, along with Fiona Apple, Velvet Revolver, Alejandro Escovedo, Sum 41, Stephen Malkmus, Arctic Monkeys, and Turnstile.
Fresh acts also made it into the list, namely Olivia Rodrigo, Boygenius, Big Thief, Japanese Breakfast, Noah Kahan, and Momma, among others.
Rolling Stone admitted that it was hard enough to pick just one song from the greats, and choosing only 200 was an even bigger challenge, noting that “rock keeps growing because rock keeps changing.”
