Former England captain Kevin Pietersen says he is “immensely proud” to join Brendon McCullum’s white-ball team.
Pietersen will work as a specialist mentor. The 46-year-old will join a coaching team that includes Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor.
He will work with England during the T20 international and ODI series against Sri Lanka later this month.
The appointment also supports England’s plans for the 2027 Cricket World Cup. South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will host the tournament.
Respect for KP
McCullum spoke highly of Pietersen in an interview with Sky Sports.
“I’ve got immense respect for KP and what he’s achieved in the game.
“He’s had an amazing impact on English cricket. His experience, knowledge and stature will bring a lot to this team.
“I’m particularly excited for our batters to get the opportunity to work with him.
“KP has a unique understanding of what it takes to perform at the highest level. That knowledge will be hugely valuable to our players.
“We’ve always respected each other. We also appreciate what the other brings to the game. I’m really looking forward to working together.”
World Cup winner
Pietersen won the T20 World Cup with England. He also played 136 ODIs and 37 T20 internationals.
His white-ball experience gives him plenty to share with captain Harry Brook and the England squad.
Pietersen will join England’s white-ball tours of Australia and South Africa this winter.
He will then return for the 2027 home series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
His role will give England’s players access to one of the country’s most experienced former batters.

Pietersen also spoke to Sky Sports about his return to the England setup.
“I’m immensely proud to have been asked to help this team on their journey to win a World Cup in South Africa.
“Putting on the England uniform again for the first time since 2014 is a profound honour and a deeply special moment.
“We have an incredibly talented white-ball squad. I am excited to get in the trenches and work relentlessly with these players.
