McCullum’s England Test Reign Ends as Hussain Backs Timing

Brendon McCullum’s spell as England’s Test head coach has ended. Former captain Nasser Hussain believes the decision came at the right time after a sharp decline in results.

England removed McCullum from his Test role after a heavy Ashes defeat in Australia. They then suffered a disappointing home Test series loss to New Zealand.

However, McCullum will continue to coach England’s white-ball teams. His latest success came in a 4-0 T20I series win against India.

England dominate T20 series

England completed the series with a dominant 56-run victory in Southampton on Saturday.

Two outstanding batting performances powered the win. Jos Buttler smashed 131 from just 64 deliveries.

Captain Harry Brook also produced a stunning innings. He hit an unbeaten 95 from only 45 balls.

England reached a huge 257-3 before securing another convincing victory.

Hussain backs coaching change

Nasser Hussain spoke after news of McCullum’s departure emerged on Sunday. The Sky Sports pundit believes England made the right decision by separating the Test and white-ball roles.

McCullum changed England’s approach after taking charge in 2022. He worked alongside Ben Stokes to introduce the ultra-aggressive ‘Bazball’ philosophy.

England won 11 of McCullum’s first 13 Tests. However, their results have since declined.

England have lost eight of their last 12 Tests. The run has brought McCullum’s Test era to an end.

Stokes has also retired from international cricket. Harry Brook now ranks among the leading candidates to become England’s next Test captain.

Hussain believes England need a more detailed approach as they rebuild their red-ball team.

“If you’re going to keep [ECB managing director] Rob Key, whose attention to detail is not his strongest suit, then below him you need someone who is absolutely across everything and doesn’t miss a trick,” Hussain said.

“For me, the best person would be Andy Flower by a country mile.

“He took England to number one in the world and his attention to detail was exceptional. That’s what’s been missing from this Test side.”

Flower the leading candidate

Andy Flower currently coaches IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He is understood to be one of several candidates for the role.

Andrew Flintoff, Justin Langer and Jonathan Trott have also attracted attention.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould confirmed that Rob Key will lead the search.

“We haven’t spoken to any candidates before holding discussions with Brendon McCullum,” Gould said.

“We have a shortlist featuring world-class coaches.

“Ideally, we’ll have someone in place for the Pakistan Test series [in August], but if it takes longer to secure the right person, we’ll wait.”

McCullum gutted but grateful

McCullum admitted he was disappointed to leave the Test role but reflected proudly on what he and Stokes achieved together.

“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together,” he said.

“There have been unbelievable highs and some tough days, but that’s part of the journey.

“Of course, I’m gutted not to continue, but I respect the decision. My full focus is now on helping England’s white-ball teams continue to improve.”

He also wished the Test squad every success, describing the group as “a special bunch of lads” and pledging to support them from afar.

White-ball challenge awaits

Despite backing McCullum’s achievements, Hussain believes the split allows England to maximise their strengths.

He praised the excitement Bazball brought during its early years but admitted recent performances suggested change was needed.

“I don’t think it was the right decision to give one person both the Test and white-ball jobs,” Hussain said.

“England are now the world’s number one ranked T20 side, and I think Brendon’s coaching style is perfectly suited to white-ball cricket. The timing feels right.”

England next turn their attention to a three-match ODI series against India before opening their Test campaign against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19.
