F1 News: Toto Wolff Responds to Verstappen Red Bull Extension

Max Verstappen has ended months of transfer speculation by signing a new Red Bull contract through the end of 2030.

The announcement came before his home Dutch Grand Prix. It extends his previous deal, which was due to expire in 2028.

The new agreement also removes the exit clauses that could have allowed Verstappen to leave in 2027.

Mercedes and McLaren had both been linked with the four-time world champion. However, those options are now closed for the foreseeable future.

Wolff: ‘No disappointment’

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said Verstappen’s new deal did not disappoint him.

Speaking to Sky Sports in Zandvoort, Wolff explained that Mercedes had already made its plans for the future.

“Most important was that we had the clarity in the team since a long time,” he said.

“We’re committed to George [Russell] and Kimi [Antonelli] – and in a way, that was just a logical consequence what happened now.”

Wolff also joked that the latest contract announcement had ended the usual driver-market speculation.

“Silly season is officially cancelled now, and everybody can concentrate on the racing.”

When asked if Verstappen’s long-term Red Bull commitment caused any disappointment, Wolff gave a clear answer.

“No, not at all. We know each other well,” he said.

“With Kimi and George, it’s the perfect set-up we have and the perfect line-up, so there is no disappointment.”

The comments show that Mercedes has moved on from its previous interest in Verstappen.

The team had explored the possibility of signing the Dutch driver in recent seasons. Now, Mercedes appears fully committed to Russell and Antonelli.

Russell brings experience to the line-up, while Antonelli represents one of the sport’s most promising young talents.

Wolff believes the combination gives Mercedes a strong foundation for the next phase of Formula 1.

As a result, the Toto Wolff Verstappen Red Bull extension story is also a sign that Mercedes has settled on its long-term driver plan.

Red Bull stability

For Red Bull, Verstappen’s extension provides valuable stability.

Red Bull has been working to regain the dominance it enjoyed during Verstappen’s championship-winning years. Retaining its star driver gives the team a clear direction.

Verstappen has won four world championships and remains one of the sport’s leading drivers. His continued presence will therefore be central to Red Bull’s plans.

For Mercedes, meanwhile, the situation is equally clear.

Wolff has confirmed that Russell and Antonelli remain the team’s preferred pairing. The squad can now focus on developing both drivers without the constant speculation surrounding Verstappen.

The driver market could become active again when contracts across the grid approach their expiry dates. For now, however, the situation is settled.

Verstappen is staying with Red Bull, while Mercedes is backing Russell and Antonelli.
