Wales filled with the songs of Bonnie Tyler on Monday as thousands of fans gathered in Swansea to farewell the Welsh music icon.
Tyler’s coffin arrived at Swansea Minster as fans sang some of the songs that made her famous worldwide. Her classic tracks included “It’s a Heartache” and “If I Sing You a Love Song.”

Wales bids farewell to a beloved icon
Fans gathered in Swansea to remember Tyler and celebrate her connection with Wales.
Locals praised the singer for staying close to her Welsh roots despite her international fame.
“She is a Welsh icon,” said Bette Richards, a 75-year-old retiree who attended the funeral. “She was a beautiful person. She never changed.”
Another fan, John Edwards, 70, remembered Tyler as an “ordinary person” despite her decades of global success.
“She was one of us. I feel proud … Everybody loves her. It is a big loss.”
Her long-time tour manager Matt Davis also paid tribute during the funeral. He remembered Tyler as a performer who could “command any stage” and who had lived a “big and well-lived life.”
Davis also praised her humility. He said Tyler was “always a star but never a diva.”
Roger Bell discovered Tyler and later became her friend. He praised her for maintaining a strong connection with her roots.
“There was a warmth and sincerity about her that shone through, and she never said no to having a photo taken or giving an autograph to anyone who asked,” he told mourners.
From Wales to global stardom
Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins and grew up in a traditional coal-mining village northwest of Swansea.
She began her singing career in the 1970s with “Lost in France.” Soon after, “It’s a Heartache” became an international hit.
However, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” took her career to another level. The song reached number one in both Britain and the United States.
Tyler continued to record and perform music throughout her career. Her distinctive voice and emotional performances helped her connect with audiences around the world.
Her success also made her a major figure in Welsh popular culture. Despite her international fame, she continued to embrace her Welsh identity.
Tyler’s final months and battle for recovery
Even at age 75, Tyler continued her musical career. Before her hospitalization in May 2026, Tyler was preparing for a European tour in Malta to mark 50 years since the release of “Lost in France.”
The singer was rushed to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, for emergency surgery to treat a perforated intestine. She was then placed in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit to aid her recovery.
On June 15, she regained consciousness but remained in critical condition and very unwell in the ICU. On July 8, Tyler unexpectedly passed away due to complications from her illness.
